Hand & Foot Therapy for Neurological Diseases
Restricted movement of hands, arms and legs or hemiplegia are often consequences of stroke, head injury or multiple sclerosis, which cannot be fully restored with standard therapy.
Physical therapy is also sometimes limited and does not offer patients satisfactory control over their hands or feet. In that case, recoveriX comes into play and gives you a new chance!
But what can patients with neurological diseases do when physical or occupational therapy has not produced any improvement for a long time?
Outpatient hand or foot therapy "recoveriX" trains the patient's brain, resulting in significant improvements in gross and fine motor skills (hands, arms) and freedom of movement of the arms, hands and legs. In addition, spasticity, tremors, and pain can be significantly reduced.
25 therapy sessions of 50 minutes each
Hand and foot recoveriX therapy can be done once or twice a day. Therefore, the patient only has to travel 13 times to Barcelona.
In addition to a pre and post examination, personal feedback interviews are conducted to determine objective and subjective improvements.
At the end of the therapy patients receive a certificate of success, which summarizes the results and improvements.
It's never too late for therapy
Our scientific studies have shown that recoveriX hand or foot therapy remains highly effective 10, 20 or 30 years after the neurological disease - in contrast to the general opinion that after one year no more success could be achieved.
Our patients were exclusively chronic patients. In several statistical analyses and video documentation we were able to clearly demonstrate the improvements.
Especially in times of a pandemic, quality of life and rehabilitation should not be given up. That is why recoveriX hand and foot therapy is possible with appropriate safety measures.
What makes recoveriX therapy special?
This therapy stands out clearly from others. The unique combination of 3 standard therapies begins where the damage occurred: in the brain. The key to success is the direct connection between the cognitive processes and the execution of the movements of the affected hands and feet.
During the 25 therapy sessions, patients imagine a hand or leg movement 6,000 times. This is about the same number that a child needs to learn to walk. This creates new connections in the brain, allowing the patient to relearn the ability to move.

recoveriX is a unique combination of 3 therapies
Imagine a hand or foot movement - your imagination triggers in the brain practically the same activity as a real hand or foot movement. This is exactly what RecoveryiX uses for its therapy! With the following three types of neurofeedback, recoveriX improves the chances of a successful therapy.
Movement imagination
Imagine a hand movement. recoveriX measures and analyzes your brain signals (EEG) and determines if you imagine the movement correctly. As soon as recoveriX recognizes your imagination of the movement, it is simulated on the computer screen and the stimulation of the muscles of the affected hand is performed.
Therapy success
The areas of the brain responsible are activated by motor function, which can promote brain plasticity. Unlike conventional physical therapy, BCI ensures that real movements only take place when people imagine the corresponding movement.
The simultaneous activation of relevant cortical areas and peripheral neurons promotes Hebbian learning.
Visual feedback
The simulation on the screen makes the imagined movement visible. Patients sit in front of a screen and see the hands or legs of an avatar. This gives patients the feeling of watching their own movements in front of a mirror. If recoveriX detects their imagination of mental movement (for example, a movement for the right hand), the avatar also moves the right hand.
Therapy success
This real-time feedback is very easy to understand. When a patient imagines a movement, the avatar executes that movement.
Visual feedback is very close to the beginning of mirror therapy. It can facilitate the activation of mirror neurons.
Muscle stimulation
For stimulation, two electrodes are attached to the dorsal flexors of the forearms or legs. When recoveriX detects a correct movement pattern, the muscles are electrically stimulated in real time, resulting in the actual movement of the hand. In this way the brain learns to find new ways to make movement possible.
Therapy success
The patient receives clear, easy-to-use feedback through active movement. He or she magines a movement and will then be able to see how the body moves accordingly.
The patient will be motivated because recovery therapy continuously reminds him/her of the desired goal: to be able to move again or better.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How do I know if the treatment is working?
In order to determine whether the treatment is effective, the recoveriX team performs special tests. They are done before therapy, 4 times during therapy and after therapy. Approved tests are conducted with the patient and videos are recorded. The results are summarized in a final report and given to the patient. This allows for a very objective evaluation of the improvement.
For which patients is recoveriX therapy suitable?
RecoveriX therapy was developed especially for patients with neurological diseases. Patients who suffer motor disabilities as a result of stroke, head trauma, multiple sclerosis or brain injury can make use of recoveriX therapy.
In addition, hemiplegia, movement restrictions, pain, tremors or spasticity can also be treated with recoveriX.
Is recoveriX therapy suitable for patients with apoplexy?
Yes, the efficacy of recoveriX has been scientifically proven in patients with apoplexy. Because apoplexy damages brain regions, recoveriX can be used to create new neuron connections in the brain.
Is recoveriX therapy also suitable for people with a history of epilepsy?
recoveriX therapy can also be used in patients with epilepsy. However, the final decision should be made together with the neurologist responsible for the patient.
Are disorders of consciousness and/or attention deficit criteria for exclusion?
A significant disorder of speech, cognition and/or attention (such as aphasia or Wernicke's dementia) that prevents the patient from understanding and/or performing tasks is a criterion for exclusion.
Is recoveriX suitable for spasticity therapy?
Yes, recoveriX is suitable for the treatment of spasticity and the scientific study found a significant reduction of it. Through recoveriX therapy new connections are made between the neurons of the brain, and therefore the muscles are revived. This leads to a reduction of spasticity.
What movements can be trained with recoveriX?
recoveriX offers muscle stimulation of the left and right arm to perform dorsiflexion, as well as of the left or right foot. This improves the functions of the lower and upper extremities.
Are the improvements caused by recoveriX long-lasting?
Yes, the improvements are long-lasting and permanent.
How long does a recoveriX treatment take?
A block of recoveriX therapy contains 25 individual treatment sessions. Three treatment sessions per week are recommended. Patients can receive up to two treatment sessions per day. This is especially helpful in reducing travel time to a recoveriX gym.
What can patients do at home after recoveriX therapy?
It is important to keep the brain busy through various mental tasks. A significant exercise is, for example, imagining hand, arm or foot movements to activate the sensory-motor cortex. Patients should be sure to train different concepts of movement. We recommend alternating the left hand, then the right hand, then the foot.
In addition to brain training, patients should perform some physical exercises at home to exercise the muscles, especially the affected extremities. recoveriX therapy can dramatically reduce spasticity in the legs. However, this requires that the walking muscles be strengthened.
We observe that patients walk a little more slowly after the first few sessions of recoveriX therapy. This is because spasticity decreases and a stiff leg or foot becomes more flexible. With physical activity and recoveriX training, strength and muscle control improve. After the 25th therapy session, patients are able to stand and walk much faster than before therapy.
Is it beneficial for me to repeat the recoveriX therapy?
Yes, it is highly recommended. Patients who repeat the recoveriX therapy may improve even more. After a successful hand therapy, we recommend patients to start the therapy on their feet.
How often should the recoveriX therapy be performed?
The recoveriX therapy block consists of 25 therapy sessions. We recommend three therapy sessions per week, each lasting one hour. Of course, it is also possible to combine them with other therapies or rehabilitation programs (physical or occupational therapy). The more the patient is trained, the more he or she can improve.
When is recoveriX therapy most effective?
recoveriX can be used for stroke rehabilitation in acute, subacute and chronic stages, as several patient cases have shown. Our scientific study has shown that recoverX therapy can also be used 10, 20, 30,... years after the stroke or neurological disease.
Can recoveriX be combined with traditional physical or occupational therapy?
Yes. In fact, recoveriX combines three standard therapies into one single treatment: (i) functional electrical stimulation, (ii) motor imagination and (iii) mirror neuron therapy. Additional physical therapy may be beneficial to the patient.
How does the therapist know if the patient is doing everything right?
recoveriX is able to calculate the accuracy of motion concepts. The therapist sees this accuracy between 0-100% and therefore can support the patient to improve it as much as possible to achieve a higher therapy success. For example, the more the patient focuses on the perception of movement and performs it correctly, the higher the accuracy. Therefore, the patient actively controls his or her own therapeutic success.
Scientific study has shown that patients with an accuracy of more than 80% improve more than patients who stay below 80%.
Does the electrical stimulation of the muscles hurt?
Electrical muscle stimulation is painless and completely safe. Some patients report feeling a slight tingling in their muscles.
How much instruction is needed to successfully perform the recoveriX therapy?
Patients do not need a therapy session exclusively for instruction - they can start therapy immediately. Before the first session, patients only need to learn the general procedure and simple instructions for the therapy session. The first session is already part of the therapy.
